Book Review - Pale Blue Dot by Carl Sagan
If you've read "Cosmos", then you will be familiar with the way that Sagan takes us on a journey through his visionary perspective on the relation between us - as the human species - and the grand, infinite Universe in which we live.
In "Pale Blue Dot", Sagan describes the current global constructs, including political, philosophical and religious, that affect the future of the human's endeavor to travel outward into the Solar System and beyond.
He eloquently outlines how we have the necessary technology to propel ourselves into a spacefaring, multi-world inhabiting species, but we lack the general commitment as a populace to socio-economic challenges, including support from the general populace and reluctance by politicians to allot large lump sums of money to space programs, despite defense spending of many nations being exponatially largely than anything the space program would require to put humans on distant worlds, like Mars and Titan.
This book is a beautifully crafted outline of Sagan's thoughts on the future of the human species, especially our role in space, and postulates whether we can afford not to expand outwards, lest we become an extinct mammalian species, like the many others that are no longer with us.
Is there other intelligent life out there waiting? And if not, don't we owe it to the Universe to ensure the longevity of our species, as such a novel expression of the wonders of Life. Carl Sagan tackles these questions, and more, in this must read for any curious mind about what lies beyond Earth's atmosphere.
