“I” is a small word that asks us to imagine someone behind it.
When a machine uses it, what are we hearing? A convenient way to hold a conversation? A character it has been asked to play? An account of a continuing identity?
And what would any of those tell us about whether it experiences anything?
This is where the question becomes interesting to me. What would justify the step from recognizing a voice to recognizing someone?
